Idleness , Bad Habit
There are some that profess Idleness in its full dignity, who call themselves the Idle, who boast2 that they do nothing, and thank their stars that they have nothing to do; who sleep every night till they can sleep no longer, and rise only that exercise may enable them to sleep again; who prolong the reign of darkness by double curtains, and never see the sun but to "tell him how they hate his beams"; whose whole labor is to vary the postures of indulgence3 , and whose day differs from their night but as a couch or chair differs from a bed.
These are the true and open votaries of Idleness, for whom she weaves4 the garlands of poppies, and into whose cup she pours the water of oblivion; who exist in a state of unruffled stupidity, forgetting and forgotten; who have long ceased to live, and at whose death the survivors can only say that they have ceased5 to breathe.
But Idleness predominates6 in many lives where it is not suspected; for being a vice which terminates in itself, it may be enjoyed without injury to others; and is therefore not watched like Fraud, which endangers property, or like Pride, which naturally seeks its gratifications in another's inferiority. Idleness is a silent and peaceful quality, that neither raises envy by ostentation, nor hatred by opposition; and therefore nobody is busy to censure or detest it.
There are others to whom Idleness dictates7 another expedient, by which life may be passed unprofitable away without the tediousness of many vacant hours. The art is, to fill the day with petty business, to have always something in hand which may raise curiosity, but not solicitude, and keep the mind in a state of action, but not of labor.
No man is so much open to conviction as the idler, but there is none on whom it operates so little. What will be the effect of this paper I know not: perhaps he will read it and laugh, and light the fire in his furnace; but my hope is that he will quit his trifles, and betake himself to rational and useful diligence.

Competition
It is a plain fact that we are in a world where competition is going on in all areas and at all levels. This is exciting.Yet, on the other hand, competition breeze a pragmatic attitude.People choose to learn things that are useful, and do things that are profitable.Todays' college education is also affected by this general sense of utilitarianism.
Many college students choose business nor computing programming as their majors convinced that this professions are where the big money is. It is not unusual to see the college students taking a part time jobs as a warming up for the real battle.I often see my friends taking GRE tests, working on English or computer certificates and taking the driving licence to get a licence. Well, I have nothing against being practical. As the competition in the job market gets more and more intense, students do have reasons to be practical. However, we should never forget that college education is much more than skill training. Just imagine, if your utilitarianism is prevails on campus, living no space for the cultivation of students' minds,or nurturing of their soul. We will see university is training out well trained spiritless working machines. If utilitarianism prevails society, we will see people bond by mind-forged medicals lost in the money-making ventures;we will see humality lossing their grace and dignity, and that would be disastrous.I'd like to think society as a courage and people persumed for profit or fame as a horese that pulls the courage.Yet without the driver picking direction the courage would go straight and may even end out in a precarious situation .
A certificate may give you some advantage, but broad horizons, positive attitudes and personal integrities ,these are assets you cannot acquire through any quick fixed way.In today's world, whether highest level of competition is not of skills or expertise , but vision and strategy. Your intellectual quality largely determinds how far you can go in your career.

Chinese Undergraduates in the US
Each year, elite American universities and liberal arts colleges, such as Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Amherst and Wellesley, offer a number of scholarships to Chinese high school graduates to study in their undergraduate programs. Four years ago, I received such a scholarship from Yale.
What are these Chinese undergrads like? Most come from middle-class families in the big urban centers of China. The geographical distribution is highly skewed, with Shanghai and Beijing heavily over-represented. Outside the main pool, a number of Yale students come from Changsha and Ningbo, swhereseach year American Yale graduates are sent to teach English.
The overwhelming majority of Chinese undergraduates in the US major in science, engineering or economics. Many were academic superstars in their high schools - gold medallists in international academic Olympiads or prize winners in national academic contests. Once on US campuses, many of them decide to make research a lifelong commitment.
Life outside the classroom constitutes an important part of college life. At American universities the average student spends less than thirteen hours a week in class. Many Chinese students use their spare time to pick up some extra pocket money. At Yale, one of the most common campus jobs is washing dishes in the dining halls. Virtually all Chinese undergraduates at Yale work part-time in the dining halls at some point in their college years. As they grow in age and sophistication, they upgrade to better-paying and less stressful positions. The more popular and interesting jobs include working as a computer assistant, math homework grader, investment office assistant and lab or research assistant. The latter three often lead to stimulating summer jobs.
Student activities are another prominent feature of American college life. Each week there are countless student-organized events of all sorts - athletic, artistic, cultural, political or social (i.e. just for fun). New student organizations are constantly being created, and Chinese undergrads contribute to this ferment. Sport looms much larger on US campuses than in China. At Yale, intramural sports from soccer to water polo take place all year long; hence athletic talent is a real social asset. One of the Chinese students at Yale several years ago was a versatile sportsman. His athletic talents and enthusiastic participation in sporting events, combined with his other fine qualities, made him a popular figure in his residential college.

I Want to Know
It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.
It doesn’t interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dreams, for the adventure of being alive.
It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon. I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life’s betrayals or have become shriveled and closed from fear of further pain!
It doesn’t interest me if the story you’re telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself; if you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul. if you can be faithful and therefore be trustworthy.
It doesn’t interest me to know where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up after a night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone, and do what needs to be done for the children.
It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away. I want to know if you can be alone with yourself, and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.
It doesn’t interest me who you are, how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back.
I want to know if you can sit with pain, without moving to hide it.
I want to know if you can be with joy, mine or your own, if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, be realistic, or to remember the limitations of being human.
I want to know if you can see beauty , if you can source your life from god’s presence. I want to know if you can live with failure, yours and mine, and still stand on the edge of a lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, “Yes!”

Beauty
there were a sensitivity and a beauty to her that have nothing to do with looks. She was one to be listened to, whose words were so easy to take to heart.
I have thought about her often over the years and how she struggled in a society that places an incredible premium on looks, class, wealth and all the other fineries of life. She suffered from a disfigurement that cannot be made to look attractive. I know that her condition hurt her deeply.
Would her life have been different had she been pretty? Chances are it would have. And yet there were a sensitivity and a beauty to her that had nothing to do with looks. She was one to be listened to, whose words were so easy to take to heart. Her words came from a wounded but loving heart, very much like all hearts, but she had more of a need to be aware of it, to live with it and learn from it. She possessed a fine-tuned sense of beauty. Her only fear in life was the loss of a friend.
It is said that the true nature of being is veiled. The labor of words, the expression of art, the seemingly ceaseless buzz that is human thought all have in common the need to get at what really is so. The hope to draw close to and possess the truth of being can be a feverish one. In some cases it can even be fatal, if pleasure is one's truth and its attainment more important than life itself. In other lives, though, the search for what is truthful gives life.
The truth of her life was a desire to see beyond the surface for a glimpse of what it is that matters. She found beauty and grace and they befriended her, and showed her what is real.

Work and Pleasure
To be really happy and really safe, one ought to have at least two or three hobbies, and they must all be real. It is no use starting late in life to say: “I will take an interest in this or that.” Such an attempt only aggravates the strain of mental effort. A man may acquire great knowledge of topics unconnected with his daily work, and yet hardly get any benefit or relief. It is no use doing what you like; you have got to like what you do. Broadly speaking, human beings may be divided into three classes: those who are toiled to death, those who are worried to death, and those who are bored to death. It is no use offering the manual labourer, tired out with a hard week’s sweat and effort, the chance of playing a game of football or baseball on Saturday afternoon. It is no use inviting the politician or the professional or business man, who has been working or worrying about serious things for six days, to work or worry about trifling things at the weekend.
It may also be said that rational, industrious useful human beings are divided into two classes: first, those whose work is work and whose pleasure is pleasure; and secondly, those whose work and pleasure are one. Of these the former are the majority. They have their compensations. The long hours in the office or the factory bring with them as their reward, not only the means of sustenance, but a keen appetite for pleasure even in its simplest and most modest forms. But Fortune’s favoured children belong to the second class. Their life is a natural harmony. For them the working hours are never long enough. Each day is a holiday, and ordinary holidays when they come are grudged as enforced interruptions in an absorbing vocation. Yet to both classes the need of an alternative outlook, of a change of atmosphere, of a diversion of effort, is essential. Indeed, it may well be that those whose work is their pleasure are those who most need the means of banishing it at intervals from their minds.

Staying at a certain place long enough . Everybody needs to know where the toilet is. I tried to find one when I first visited the Divinity School Library, the oldest school in Yale University: I tried to find the signs with words such as WC, Ladies, Bathroom, and Washroom. I used all the knowledge I had about toilet, but I could not find one. My common sense told me that it was impossible not to find one in the library, so I kept trying. Eventually I found a door on which was a single word: WOMEN.
Although it did not look at all like a toilet, I assumed it must be one. And because I couldn't wait any longer, I had to try it. As I opened the door, I was sure I made a mistake, so I came out immediately. For what I had entered was a room much larger than my living room in Beijing, with a standing lamp by an antique-like table on a beautiful green carpet. On one side of the room, there was a very decent brown sofa, above which there was a wall mirrored up to the ceiling. There were two other sofas, by the side of the table. In one corner was a clothes hanger and in another corner was a big pot of green plants. It looked like a sitting room or lobby in a hotel. There was no sign of a toilet. But it was the only possible place a toilet could be. Then I remembered that there was another door in the room, so I went back in and opened the door. And there it was! What relief! I found it at last! The toilet room was only half the size of the outer room. It had only two seats with two sinks. What luxury“! It was like a two-room flat.
After I relieved myself, another question occurred to me: since it was impossible for such a big library to have only one toilet, I had to ask someone about toilets. A “Rest Room” is also a toilet. The “rest” had only one seat and it was unisex. Both women and men could use it by locking the door from the inside.
To refer to a toilet as a “rest room” is miles apart from the Chinese idea of a toilet. I never related the “rest room” with a “toilet”。 Here at Yale, when I use a toilet designated “women”, I feel myself a queen and enjoy looking at myself in a large mirror to see if I am properly attired. And when using a “rest room”, I do have a feeling of rest, because it is clean and has a window with a beautiful view.
My experience with the toilet at Yale has enlightened me as to why American visitors often asked for the toilet when they arrived at our university: they may have needed to relieve themselves but they may have needed more to make sure that they were presentable before meeting our president. It is a kind of moment of privacy that they need. I can imagine how disappointed they must have been when they found no mirrors in our toilets! Their toilets have more functions than ours.
Gump, gifted with a low IQ which lets him be adorably childlike even as he grows up, leads a very charmed life: a mother who loves him immensely and who sleeps with the school principal in order to make sure her child has the best education, a miraculous incident that eliminates the need for him to have braces for his legs, a childhood girlfriend who remains faithful to him till the end, surviving Vietnam with a medal, and, in general, a propensity for turning everything that happens to him into good.
I wonder what the movie is trying to say. From one perspective, it implies that intelligence (as measured by IQs and the general idea of what "smart" is) is a very unnecessary trait. But I think one can look beyond that and say that childlike innocence, which can be considered stupid, has its rewards. Throughout the movie, Gump is in situations where he is harassed by other people but he never takes offense (except, of course, when his girl Jenny is being abused) at any of the insults thrown at him. He is indeed not completely stupid, even though he is portrayed as such, since he can re-assemble guns at high speed, run like crazy, play ping-pong like a maniac, and so on.
The fact that Gump doesn't take offense, I think, is what keeps him content. He becomes a millionaire, but gives most of the money away. He is honest and open and this, along with his Alabama accent, endears him to the audience. But this gets tiresome after a while (especially after 2 hours). I thought the movie was overly long, but that's the only negative thing I have to say.
The traditional male heroes that we have had are all dysfunctional in some respect or another and we are lost without heroes, as Bloom points out. Gump is a new kind of a role-model; he's A Nice Boy and everyone knows they're hard to find. As one reviewer said: "Today the last American hero is a Tom Hanks character with a small IQ".
Forest Gump is the runaway hit movie of this summer.

Net Aroma: E-mail tries out a sense of smell
You could soon be able to spice up your e-mails with your favourite perfume.
UK net provider Telewest Broadband is testing a system to let people to send aromatic e-mails over the internet.
It has developed a kind of hi-tech air freshener that plugs into a PC and sprays a smell linked to the message.
Telewest say it could be used by supermarkets to tempt people with the smell of fresh bread or by holiday companies seeking to stir up images of sun-kissed beaches.
"This could bring an extra whiff of realism to the internet," said Chad Raube, director of internet services at Telewest Broadband.
"We are always looking at ways to enhance the broadband internet experience of the future and this time we are sure consumers will come up smelling of roses."
Emotional response
The technology behind the idea was originally developed by US company Trisenx. Scientists at Telewest's labs in Woking, Surrey, have built on that research to come up with the idea of a "scent dome".
The dome comes with a cartridge containing 20 basic aromas, which can be combined to produce up to 60 different smells.
A "scented e-mail" would contain electronic signals that would tell the dome to release the smell of flowers, perfume or coffee.
"Our sense of smell is directly connected to our emotions," said anthropologist Kate Fox, director of the Social Issues Research Centre in Oxford.
"Smells trigger very powerful and deep-seated emotional responses, and this additional element to the internet will enhance users' online experience by adding that crucial third dimension."
But the chance to sniff your e-mails not may come cheap. Telewest says its "scent dome" could cost around 250 and would only work with a high-speed, broadband connection.

Valentine's Day is a special time for love. Millions of people will receive flowers, chocolate or some other gift. Others might get just a phone call or an electronic message from someone they care about.
Still others would be happy just to have someone special in their life on Valentine's Day.
Tradition tells us that Saint Valentine was a third-century Roman who performed marriages and died for his Christian beliefs on February fourteenth. That was a day celebrated in ancient Rome in connection with love.
Traditionally, young people in America lived with their parents until marriage. Some still do. But, in general, young people have grown more independent. They wait longer to get married.
Even then, they still have to find the right person.
There are many ways for people to meet. Some meet at work. Others meet by chance. Still others look for help from services that bring people together.
Friends and family members might offer to help. They might plan a blind date. This is a meeting between two people who have never seen each other before. And, unless things go well, may never seen each other again.
In movies, two people often fall in love after what Hollywood calls a "cute meet." They might be lawyers on opposite sides in a court case. Or one person gets a letter meant for the other. Or their dogs get into a fight on the street. Who knows how many people really do meet this way.
In real life, finding a person and establishing a relationship is usually hard work.
A lot of people try to improve their chances by looking in places where people with similar interests go. This might be a place of religion. Or a bookstore. Many bookstores in America offer special programs and social activities for single people.
Singles may join health clubs or sports teams where men and women play together. If nothing else, at least they get some exercise.
But sometimes none of these efforts succeed. So people might try to meet someone over the Internet. Here too there are no guarantees.
Internet dating services had been growing sharply through the end of two thousand three. But the industry growth rate has slowed.

It is universally true that all parents in the world love their children .However , as parents' views of life vary ,they show their love in different ways .Generally speaking ,parents can be classified into three types, the monarch type , the servant type, and the friend type according to their different ways of showing their love for their children .
The monarch type of parents are intolerant , antocratic, and selfcentered .They lay down regulations in the family for their children to observe .Furthermore, they insist that their children should act upon them without question . When their authority is challenged ,they become infuriated. With a firm belief in their own philosophy of life ,they hvave litter respect for others' opinions, least of all, their children's. The sentence they say most frequently to their children is, "You should do this."
Contrary to the monarch-type parents, the servant-type parents revolve around their children all the time . they are soft ,good-nature ,and easy-going. They never deny their children any wish ,and cheerful run to buy anything their children ask for .They are happy so long as their children are content .With the sincere belief that love means sacrifice, they are ready to give up anything for their children's sake .With their children at the center of their lives , they always ask" what else can we do for you?"
The friends-type parents ,as the term implies, treat their children as friends .They are generous and wise.Like good friends ,they disscuss with their children the lastest news, share their children's interests, and listen attentively to their children's expression of emotion ,whether it is anger ,fear ,joy or sorrow. They have an intimate relationship with their children while adhering to their prinicipled stand. They discuss problems with their children rather than provide ready solutions. They respect their children as their equals. They often say ,"Let's put our heads toghter and see wihat we can do"
There is no doubt that children welcome the third type of parents, for a free, friendly ,and sympathetic atomosphere at home is most favorable to the development of youngsters both in body and in mind .All parents should re-examine and change some of their ways of showing their love if they want their children to grow up happily and healthily.

Time and tide wait for no man.
Just for today I will be agreeable. I will look as well as I can, dress becomingly, talk low, act courteously, criticize not one bit, and try not to improve or regulate anybody but myself.Just for today I will have a program. I may not follow it exactly, but I will have it. I will save myself from two pests: hurry and indecision.Just for today I will have a quiet half hour all by myself and relax. During this half hour, sometime, I will try to get a better perspective of my life.Just for today I will be unafraid. Especially I will not be afraid to enjoy what is beautiful, and to believe that as I give to the world, so the world will give to me.

When I come across a good essay in reading newspapers, I am often inclined to cut and keep it. But just as I am about to do so I find the article on the opposite side is as much interesting. It may be a discussion of the way to keep in good health, or advice about how to behave and conduct oneself in society. If I cut the front essay, the opposite one is bound to suffer damage, leaving out half of it or keeping the text without the subject. As a result, the scissors would stay before they start, or halfway done when I find out the regretful consequence that inevitably causes my repentance.
Sometimes two things are to be done at the same time, both deserving your attention. You can only take up one of them, the other has to wait or be given up. But you know the future is unpredictable—the changed situation may not allow you to do what is left behind. Thus you are caught in a fix and feel sad. How come that nice opportunities and brilliant ideas should gather around all at once. It may happen that your life changes dramatically on your preference of one alternative to the other.
In fact that is what life is like: we are often faced with the two opposite aspects of a thing which are both desirable like newspaper cutting. It often occurs that our attention is drawn to one thing only after we are engaged in another. The former may be more important than the latter and give rise to a divided mind. I still remember a philosopher’s remarks: “When one door shuts, another opens in life.” So a casual or passive choice may not be a bad one.
Whatever we do in our lifetime, wherever life’s storm tosses us, there must be something we can achieve, some shore we can land, that opens up new vistas to us. Don’t forget God always keeps an alternative door open for every one. While the front door is closed, there must be another open for you.

April Fool's Day
While popular in the U.S., the April Fool's Day tradition is even more prevalent in European countries, such as France and Great Britain. Although the roots of the traditional trickings are unclear, the French and the British both have claims on the origin of the celebration.
One theory holds that the first April Fool's Day was on April 1 of the year when King of France instituted the new calendar. This new system placed the day that had formerly been the first day of a new year on April 1. Many people were reluctant to adjust to the new calendar and continued to celebrate New Year's Day on what had become the first day of April. Thus, they become the first April fools. Others began to give gag gifts on the day to mock the foolishness of those who continued to celebrate the new year on April 1.
An English story about the day, however, holds that it began sometime during the 1200s. At the time, King John of England was in the habit of making a road out of nearly every path he walked regularly. The citizens of one particular farm village were aware of this. To avoid having their green meadows and pastures disturbed with one of the king's roads, they built a fence that prevented the king from walking through their countryside. The king sent a group of messengers to inform the villagers that they must remove the barrier. Upon hearing that the king was planning to do this, however, the villagers developed a plan of their own. When community of lunatics, with people behaving in a bizarre manner, throwing things and running around wildly. The messengers, alarmed at what they had found, reported to King John that these people were so mad as to be beyond punishment. So, the villagers saved their farmland by tricking the King.In Great Britain, tradition only allows April Fool's tricks from midnight to noon on April 1. Those who try to play tricks in the afternoon become the fools themselves.

(In 2,000 years, will the world remember Disney or Plato?)
LONDON - Down in the mall, between the fast-food joint and the bagel shop, a group of young people huddles in a flurry of baggy combat pants, skateboards, and slang. They size up a woman teetering past wearing DKNY, carrying Time magazine in one hand and a latte in the other. She brushes past a guy in a Yankees' baseball cap who is talking on his Motorola cell phone about the Martin Scorsese film he saw last night.
It's a standard American scene - only this isn't America, it's Britain. US culture is so pervasive, the scene could be played out in any one of dozens of cities. Budapest or Berlin, if not Bogota or Bordeaux. Even Manila or Moscow.
As the unrivaled global superpower, America exports its culture on an unprecedented scale. From music to media, film to fast food, language to literature and sport, the American idea is spreading inexorably, not unlike the influence of empires that preceded it.
The difference is that today's technology flings culture to every corner of the globe with blinding speed. If it took two millenniums for Plato's "Republic" to reach North America, the latest hit from Justin Timberlake can be found in Greek (and Japanese) stores within days. Sometimes, US ideals get transmitted - such as individual rights, freedom of speech, and respect for women - and local cultures are enriched. At other times, materialism or worse becomes the message and local traditions get crushed.
"The US has become the most powerful, significant world force in terms of cultural imperialism [and] expansion," says Ian Ralston, American studies director at Liverpool John Moores University. "The areas that particularly spring to mind are Hollywood, popular music, and even literature."
But what some call "McDomination" has created a backlash in certain cultures. And it's not clear whether fast food, Disney, or rock 'n' roll will change the world the way Homer or Shakespeare has. To this question we haven't got any explicit on yet.

I ‵will|practise perseverance more often, and never give up a ‵thing|because it was hard or inconvenient. If we want light, we must conquer darkness. ‵Perseverance|can sometimes equal genius in its results. “There are only ‵two creatures,” says a proverb, “who can surmount the pyramids — ‵the eagle|and the snail.”
I ‵will|school myself into a habit of attention; I ‵will not let anything come between me|and the subject in hand. I ‵will remember|that a good skater| ‵never tries to skate|in two directions at once. The habit of attention becomes ‵part of our life, if we begin early enough. I often hear grown-up people say, “I ‵could not fix my attention|on the lecture or book, ‵although I wished to do so,” and the reason is, the habit was ‵not formed in youth.
I ‵will|pay more attention|to the cultivation of the memory. I ‵will strengthen|that faculty by ‵every possible means, and on ‵every possible occasion. It takes a little ‵hard work at first|to remember things accurately; but memory ‵soon helps itself, and gives very ‵little trouble. It ‵only needs early cultivation|to become a power.
I ‵will look on the cheerful side. Life is very ‵much like a mirror: if you smile upon it, it smiles back upon you; ‵but if you frown and look doubtful on it, you will get a ‵similar look in return.
Inner sunshine|warms not ‵only the heart of the owner, ‵but of all that come in contact with it. “Who shuts love out, in turn|shall be ‵shut from love.”
I ‵will|school myself to say|‵“No” more often. I might write pages|on the importance of learning very ‵early in life|to gain that point where a young boy can stand erect, and decline doing an ‵unworthy act|because it is unworthy.
I ‵will|demand of myself more courtesy|towards my companions and friends, and ‵indeed towards strangers as well. The smallest courtesies|along the rough roads of life|are like the ‵little birds|that sing to us all winter long, and make that season of ice and snow ‵more endurable.
Finally, instead of trying hard to be happy, as if|that were the ‵sole purpose of life, I will try still ‵harder|to make others happy.
